About
Formed in 2000, JamClinic was a collaborative effort between Hummingbird Music Limited (HML) and a local Ottawa radio station. It was designed to address the educational needs of aspiring songwriters and musicians in the greater Ottawa – Gatineau area.
JamClinic is a week long course held in July, designed to better prepare young singers, songwriters and musicians for a career in the music industry. Individuals from across the country are selected and screened, placing them into groups based on their age, level of development, and preferred style of music. After enduring the week long intensive boot-camp style training, participants showcase their new found abilities at the end-of-week showcase event. Often we witness the newly penned tunes from collaborative efforts of the recently formed groups, experiencing first hand the power of collaboration.
The program has an equal balance of practical workshops which focus on performance and songwriting, and educational seminars which address various music industry principles.
Our curriculum includes an overview of intellectual property & copyrights, negotiation and allocation of royalties, the role of a publisher and various means of exploiting musical works, and licensing requirements. Additional topics include career management aspects such as; revenue streams, promotion and publicity, album recording and production fundamentals, radio and other music outlets.
The 2008 edition of JamClinic witnessed the highest attendance of participants since its inception in 2000. Over 130 participants were grouped into 24 bands. Throughout the week applicants were subjected to 2 coached rehearsals every day including industry specialists to gauge each bands improvement from day to day. In-between rehearsals participants attended lectures given by celebrity guests/industry specialists from major touring bands, record label affiliates, promoters, publicists, and independent record labels. Below is list of lectures and speakers that participated in JamClinic 2008.
Jeff Waters (Annihilator): Trials and Tribulations of a successful Artist

Each band prepared two songs for their showcase at the end of week. During the course of the week each band went through a dramatic change in their performance abilities. They may be shy, instrument-gazing performers when they start, but after 5 intensive days of JamClinic, they were transformed into passionate compelling vocalists, dynamic stick-twirling drummers, and dominant rocking guitarists, delivering an epic performance at their final showcase. Each band showcased their material with an attendance of over 500 people at two locations – The Ottawa Cisco Bluefest and the LoneStar Bar and Grill.
